The Detroit Lions have traded running back D'Andre Swift to the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles get D’Andre Swift and 7th round pick (No. 249), while the Lions received a fourth-round pick in 2025, and seventh-round pick (No. 219). In short, the Lions basically dumped Swift for a fourth round draft pick. The writing was on the wall when Detroit drafted Jahmyr Gibbs and this is great news for both of them. Swift won't be the bell cow in Philadelphia and is destined to have a lot of rushing scores siphoned off by Jalen Hurts but he should start over Rashaad Penny and Kenneth Gainwell and be a massive threat catches passes out of the backfield. Swift is likely back into the top 15 conversation after the trade. Just keep in mind he's on the last year of his contract and there's no guarantee he stays with the Eagles long-term.

The Lions are reportedly fielding trade calls for running back D'Andre Swift.
The Lions draft room erupted last night when they stunned most of planet Earth with the selection of Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs at #12 overall. The addition of Gibbs creates an instant depth chart mess as he joins Swift and the newly signed David Montgomery in the backfield. Swift's representatives reportedly contacted Detroit right away to express their displeasure. At this point, it seems a trade is more likely than not. Swift comes in as our RB16, a ranking that will move down dramatically if he stays in the Motor City.

The Detroit Lions selected running back Jahmyr Gibbs in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Detroit Lions were an unlikely landing spot for a top running back in the 2023 NFL Draft since they had D'Andrew Swift returning and signed David Montgomery away from the Chicago Bears. Still, the Lions made Jahmyr Gibbs the second running back off the board. It appears Swift, the dynasty RB15, has fallen out of favor in Detroit. It remains to be seen if he's still on the Lions' roster when the season starts this fall.

D'Andre Swift may continue to receive a lighter workload in the upcoming season in an attempt to keep him healthy.
Both GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell spoke on multiple topics during the NFL Combine interview sessions. One of the takeaways was that they attempted to keep Swift healthy by limiting his touches, yet he still missed time with shoulder and ankle ailments. It seems as though the plan may remain the same in 2023 as they attempt to keep their star runner off the trainer's table. When healthy, even with limited rushing attempts, Swift can remain a productive fantasy presence but dynasty coaches are growing impatient with his inconsistency. He's found as a falling RB9.

D'Andre Swift still has a single year remaining on his rookie contract but lack of durability could force the Lions to draft his replacement
There's no expectation the Lions will cut Swift this off-season as, when healthy, he's an elite option at the position. That said, staying healthy has been the issue. Backfield Jamaal Williams is a free agent and broke out in a big way in 2022, scoring 17 touchdowns on the year. He now has 30 touchdowns through six seasons. Williams has stated he would like to return though it's uncertain if he and the team can agree on financial terms. Over three years, Swift has only managed 364 carries but has also tallied 156 receptions. Dynasty coaches are likely to stick with the oft-injured back in hopes that he has a Barkley'ish revival in 2023 but, as evidenced by his RB9 value, some are tiring of the constant injury status and have elected to move on.
