Rookie running back Tyjae Spears is "regularly one of the most active - and noticeable - players."
Spears has also been staying after practice to catch "100-plus" balls on a consistent basis. Fellow players have also been effusive in their praise of the rookie noting his routes, versatility, and his quickness. One of the stories of the 2023 NFL Draft involved the Titans using a third-round selection on what was perceived as an unneeded position and, furthermore, on Spears who has no ACL in one knee, leading many to believe he'll be a one-contract player. At the running back position, however, few reach a second contract with their original team. With reports that Spears is already dealing with some level of arthritis due to his condition, career length continues to be an issue keeping his draft status in dynasty lower than it would otherwise be. Starter Derrick Henry is 29 and Spears figures to see touches immediately, potentially inheriting the starting role when Henry departs, likely following 2023. Tyjae Spears is found as DLF's RB47 and an intriguing second-round dynasty rookie selection

The Tennessee Titans selected Tulane running back Tyjae Spears in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Now this is interesting. Spears has long been one of our favorite sleepers and it looks as if he'll spend at least year one learning behind Derrick Henry. He is a highly productive player who has some legitimate size concerns but it's hard to argue his production. He needs to prove he's healthy but there's some real intrigue here around pick #20 in rookie drafts this Spring. Remember, this is a player who posted 1,581 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns on 6.9 yards per carry last season.

Tulane running back Tyjae Spears measured in at 5'9 1/2" and 204 lbs. at the Senior Bowl
Spears helped himself specifically with his weight, adding nearly 10 pounds from his officially listed collegiate weight. On the downside, his height is slightly less than list, but this isn't a large deduction. Also notable were his 10" hands. Size had been a significant concern with Spears but now should be limited. The junior runner produced 41 receptions over his past two season as well, perhaps setting the rookie up for a nice rise as we near the NFL Combine. He's a rising as a rookie prospect and is now listed as DLF's rookie RB13 and the R29 overall.

Rookie running back Tyjae Spears was mentioned as a player who is getting buzz at Senior Bowl practice
Every year, social media darlings begin to percolate from players not near the top of rankings and Spears is trending as an early favorite in this regard. The undersized (5'10/195) Tulane runner has a wide range of weight listings but impressed in his junior season, producing 1,581 yards and 19 touchdowns across 229 carries while also adding 22 receptions and two additional touchdowns. Spears doesn't profile as a three-down option at the next level but possesses first-step quickness, acceleration and long speed with enough physicality to be a day-three option for teams needing additional dynamic at the position. In his final collegiate game in the Cotton Bowl vs. USC, he rushed for 205 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries. Spears possesses size similar to Austin Ekeler, so anything is possible, and he's going to remain a popular upside selection in dynasty rookie drafts, potentially appearing in the late-second round. He's listed as DLF's rookie RB14 and our R32 overall. His Combine weigh-in will be closely watched.

comment As much of a unicorn as he is, Derrick Henry cannot play forever. In fact, it is fair to wonder how much time he has left given his age and workload. Tyjae Spears does not profile as a true lead back but he can be a major part of a backfield and it may happen sooner rather than later. |
