Irv Smith is expected to be the starter in 2023
He'll be backed up by Drew Sample as the team failed to address the position during the 2023 NFL Draft. Reports are the Bengals had Dalton Kincaid and Sam LaPorta at the top of their list at the position but the draft didn't fall in their favor and they weren't willing to overdraft other names. As it stands, Smith inherits significant potential if he can remain healthy, an elusive goal thus far. The team utilized "11" personnel 83% of the time, second in the NFL and the trio of receivers remains one of the best in the league. Found as DLF's TE32, there's value-on upside to Smith in a role that could see quality red zone opportunities.

The Bengals have signed tight end Irv Smith to a one year deal.
Smith was a highly regarded prospect out of Alabama just a few years ago, but he's just never been able to get his career on track playing behind players like Kyle Rudolph and TJ Hockenson. Injuries have also been an issue, as Smith has been held to just 37 games over his three years, with few of those games played truly at full health. Still, this has the makings of a sneaky good move as Smith should take over for Hayden Hurst in a truly explosive Bengals offense. If he can stay healthy, his ranking of TE28 is going to rise significantly.
