Quentin Johnston News
Quentin Johnston has tremendous range · Jun 19, 2023
Coaches and players have been effusive in their praise of rookie receiver Quentin Johnston, offensive coordinator Kellen Moore saying: "His range is really, really tremendous."
Safety Derwin James also said: "He's that guy. Him being able to get open, him being able to have the confidence to be able to go through his drills and be able to -- every catch, he's finishing his runs." Johnston has been checking all the boxes in his short time with the Chargers, and continues to present as a high-ceiling player who still needs time to develop as a route runner. He's listed as DLF's WR27 showing that the dynasty community has every expectation he'll be a productive fantasy producer sooner rather than later.
Quentin Johnston in good situation · May 17, 2023
In a PFF article ranking rookie receivers according to best situation, Quentin Johnston is second on the list
Behind only Jordan Addison, the dynamic Johnston was drafted into an upside situation when the Chargers called his name in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He'll compete with 2022 riser Josh Palmer for WR3 duty behind Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, and could face a headwind for snaps in his rookie year, but projects well when Keenan Allen moves on, potentially in 2024. Johnston is found as DLF's rookie WR4 and our WR31 overall.
Quentin Johnston stands out · May 13, 2023
Head coach Brandon Staley said Quentin Johnson "has impressive movement skills for a receiver of his size."
Johnston's movement skills and dynamic were well on display on tape and were key components in his first-round selection by the team. With veterans Keenan Allen and Mike Williams serving as mentors, Johnston should pick up the finer points of playing receiver more quickly than most other rookies though competition for targets in his rookie season will be intense. Johnston is currently listed as DLF's rookie WR4 though tightly grouped with fellow rookies Zay Flowers and Jordan Addison. Overall, Johnston is found as DLF's WR31.
Quentin Johnston elite · May 8, 2023
The Chargers prioritized yards after catch (YAC) in their search for a rookie receiver and believe Quentin Johnson is "elite" in that area
Johnston profiles as a high-ceiling, size-speed athlete though is raw in the area of route running, while also displaying some issues with focus drops. That said, there's no discounting his dynamic at the catch point and following the reception as he utilizes quick feet, agility and acceleration to churn out yards. With Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Josh Palmer ahead of him on the depth chart, Johnston won't be pressed into full-time duty as a rookie, meaning that he'll have time to learn the nuance of the position from accomplished veterans. He's listed as DLF's rookie WR4 and our WR32 overall.
Quentin Johnston drafted by the LAC · Apr 28, 2023
The Los Angeles Chargers selected wide receiver Quentin Johnston with the 21st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
This is a solid landing spot for Johnston, though dynasty managers will need to be patient as he will slot behind both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams for the foreseeable future. Johnston looks like a bit of a luxury pick at this point but dynasty managers will take it as he'll be tied long-term to Justin Herbert. There's real long-term upside here with Johnston and he has the looks of a mid-first round pick in the dynasty rookie drafts as one of the safer picks of the year.
Mock Draft: Quentin Johnston · Mar 7, 2023
In Todd McShay's first mock draft following the NFL Combine, Quentin Johnston is the first receiver off the board, selected by the Patriots 14th-overall
Yuck. Johnston possesses what could be the draft's highest ceiling due to his combination of speed and agility but focus drops and route-tree immaturity remain question marks. Combine that with a selection by New England, who hasn't had a noteworthy receiver in years, and Johnston could fall to dynasty's rookie draft WR3 or lower. By all accounts, Johnston had a fine combine performance, leaping more than 40" in his vertical, 11'2" in his broad jump but opted not to run the 40. Should the upside rookie not run his 40 at TCU's pro day, more question marks could arise. Johnston is listed as DLF's WR2 behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Quentin Johnston doesn't run 40 · Mar 4, 2023
Quentin Johnston won't run the 40-yard at the NFL Combine
Johnston will need to answer questions about recurring focus drops but he checks all the boxes related to size (6'2 1/2/213 lbs.) and turned in a 40"+ vertical and a 11'+ broad jump. A fast 40 would have answered any lingering speed questions but tape shows plus-level speed, agility, and physicality at the catch point along with post-reception dynamic. Johnston remains a battleground WR3 with firm camps of supporters and detractors.
Quentin Johnston measurements · Mar 4, 2023
Quentin Johnston measured in at roughly 6'2 1/2" and 208 lbs. with 9 5/8" hands.
He also had an 81 5/8" wingspan. For those interested, he has longer arms than Calvin Johnson and a similar wingspan. Johnston has his detractors due to a combination of perceived limited route tree and focus drops, but he profiles well to the next level and is the top size-prospect at the position in 2023. He comps as a more dynamic Tee Higgins and will be an intriguing first-round selection in both the NFL Draft and dynasty rookie drafts. He's listed as DLF's WR3 and the R5 overall.
McShay Mock: Quentin Johnston · Feb 15, 2023
In Todd McShay's first mock draft following the Super Bowl, the Texans select Quentin Johnston at 1.12.
Johnston is the size-speed prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft at wideout and his selection would pair well with their second-overall selection of Bryce Young. He possesses a high ceiling with size and agility to dominate but metric junkies won't be enamored with his dominator or breakout ratings. That said, in a draft with few dynamic large targets at receiver, Johnston remains the marquee name. He's listed as DLF's rookie WR3 and the R5 overall.
Quentin Johnston the WR2 · Jan 25, 2023
Quentin Johnston is selected as the WR2, 22nd-overall, by the Ravens in Mel Kiper's most recent mock draft
The Ravens have been unable to find success in their receiver room, even with oft-injured Rashod Bateman in the mix. A selection of Johnston would provide an immediate passing-game upgrade and a large target for Lamar Jackson, who figures to return to the team on a new monster contract in 2023. Johnston profiles as a difference-making receiver with size and length while drawing a recent comp to Cincinnati standout Tee Higgins. The issue is that with a limited route tree and raw skillset, Johnston also possesses a low floor. A selection by the Ravens won't sit well with dynasty coaches who remain uninspired by the team's passing attack but there would be no doubting his early-career role. He's listed as DLF's WR3 and the R5 overall.

comment While the immediate depth chart is muddled, the Chargers could part with both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams following the 2023 season to attain some cap relief. Johnston is the future of the position in Los Angeles and is attached to one of the game's best young quarterbacks. A great match, and Johnston brings a set of skills the Chargers do not currently have. |
