Michael Mayer is projected to be a starter for the Raiders in 2023, but veteran Austin Hooper could begin the season as the top option
Mayer lost ground during the NFL evaluation process due to somewhat pedestrian athletic scores, but remains a popular selection as the rookie TE2 behind Dalton Kincaid (BUF). Arguably, the fit for Mayer in Josh McDaniels' offense is even more noteworthy than Kincaid's should he take on the same role of retired Rob Gronkowski while with the Patriots. While Austin Hooper is an established veteran who has displayed ability in the recent past, as mentioned in the article penned by Vic Tafur: "If Mayer isn't getting most of the snaps before long, something went wrong." He remains a fringe round-one selection in dynasty rookie drafts and is found as DLF's TE15 overall.

The Las Vegas Raiders selected Notre Dame tight end with the 35th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Mayer was widely regarded as the best tight end in the class and was a possible top ten prospect not more than six months ago. However, he fell in the draft and wasn't just a second round pick, he was the third tight end selected behind Dalton Kincaid and Sam LaPorta. Regardless, this is a great spot as the Raiders have a gaping hole at tight end after trading Darren Waller to the Giants. While his draft day slide was tough to watch, the landing spot is ideal. He likely won't be a top ten dynasty rookie pick, either, but he'll have great value in round two of rookie drafts this Spring and Summer.

Michael Mayer is favored to be the first tight end off the board on day one of the 2023 NFL Draft
Mayer maintains an edge (-150) over Dalton Kincaid (+120) to be the top tight end selected in the NFL Draft according to DraftKings. Of late, Kincaid has now become an overwhelming favorite to be first off the board by NFL pundits performing mock drafts due to his blend of size and athleticism. Mayer possesses size and significant production while at Notre Dame but didn't perform as well while at the NFL Combine. Both are certain first round selections next Thursday and Mayer remains DLF's TE1, our R14 overall.

Michael Mayer ran an official 4.70 40 at the NFL Combine
It's far from but anyone scouting Mayer understands the 6'4 1/2"/ 249 lbs. tight end doesn't produce by being a speed merchant. For reference, the NFL's top two tight ends, Travis Kelce and Mark Andrews ran 4.61 and 4.67 respectively so we'd caution dynasty coaches not to read too much into the disappointing results. Mayer is clearly the top rookie tight end though may have some limited competition from Oregon State's Luke Musgrave. Mayer is still expected to be selected in the middle of the first round during the 2023 NFL Draft and will likely remain a back-end round-one rookie selection in dynasty.

Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer remains the top prospect heading into the NFL Combine
And for good reason. There aren't many draft boards showing someone other than Mayer sitting atop the field. Mayer's calling card boasts extreme flexibility, ability at the catch-point, and a three-down skillset. Length and separation concerns persist but there's little doubt the rookie has the make-up to be a first-round selection during the NFL Draft, and then again during dynasty rookie drafts as well, an uncommon occurrence in the format. A fast 40-time and measurements will be scrutinized when the group takes the field this weekend. Michael Mayer is found as DLF's rookie TE1 and the R6 overall.

ESPN's Matt Miller compares rookie tight end Michael Mayer to T.J. Hockenson
It's a fair play-style comparison that fits. Mayer carries an extra 20 lbs. and may not measure up to his 6'4" list but this will be answered next month during the NFL Combine. Dynasty managers will have to take a leap of faith as rookie tight ends often possess a long integration time into the NFL with many not panning out. To his credit, Mayer has been considered an elite-level prospect for over two years and his production at Notre Dame backs the grade. He's found as DLF's TE1 and our R8 overall.

In a recent ESPN rookie mock draft, Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer was the first tight end selected by the Packers at 19th-overall.
The selection is a good one as Mayer clearly projects as the top talent at the position. The Green Bay system has well utilized the tight end though inconsistency at the position has been an issue in recent years. The bigger question will be whether it's Aaron Rodgers at the helm to open 2023, a fact which would propel the value of Mayer in his first season. Typically difficult to project into the NFL, the tight end position is very dependent on system and quarterback and, should Rodgers retire or move on to greener pastures, Mayer's early-career value would likely be impacted. He's found as DLF's rookie TE1 and our R9 overall.
