Alexander Mattison is an American football running back for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League. He played college football at Boise State and was drafted by the Vikings in the third round, 102nd overall of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Alexander Mattison is "going above and beyond this offseason to ensure he's ready for a featured role."
Mattison continues to lag in the rankings, currently found as DLF's RB27 as Minnesota's perceived new RB1. The recently-turned 25-year-old inherited the starting role after Dalvin Cook was released earlier this month, but there appears to be concern within the dynasty community that Mattison may not be up to the challenge of retaining the new role. These concerns may have merit as the fifth-year back has averaged less than 3.8 ypc. in limited touches over the past two seasons. As it stands, Mattison is a potential three-down player able to produce as a rusher and receiver but will need prove he can be productive if he is going to hold off the team's youth options of Ty Chandler and DeWayne McBride.

With the pending release of Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison is primed to operate as the RB1 for the Vikings
Mattison signed a two-year contract earlier this offseason and isn't a free agent until 2025, paving the way for the soon-to-be 25-year-old for two years of carry-the-load production. He'll inherit an upside role with significant potential though Mattison's previous production behind starter Dalvin Cook has been less than stellar. That said, entering his fifth season, Mattison possesses the size and receiving ability to factor on all three downs and should garner a significant workload in 2023. He's is listed as DLF's RB37 and carries significant upside potential given his current value.

It's one of the hottest stories in 2023 related to the running back position and Mattison's prospects hinge on the team's decision related to release, or trade, Dalvin Cook. It's widely believed the Vikings will move on from Cook and now beyond June 1, we may not be waiting long for the answer. Whether the team releases the veteran or is able to work out a trade remains to be seen, but should Cook remain in Minnesota, Mattison's 2023 prospects would suffer. Cook has been linked to both Miami and Buffalo as possible trade destinations. As for Mattison, DLF's RB39, who turns 25 this month, he could see a significant boost to his dynasty ranking if/when news of Cook's departure is official. Until then, he's a risk-on acquisition on the potential Cook, somehow, remains in Minnesota. Patient dynasty managers may want to seek acquisition now ahead of the expected Cook move.

The Minnesota Vikings have signed running back Alexander Mattison to a two-year, $7 million contract.
Mattison has long been one of dynasty fantasy football's most popular handcuffs and lottery tickets at the running back position. While many dynasty managers could be disappointed he's back with the Vikings instead of landing a starting job elsewhere, patience could be rewarded here as Minnesota may indeed be fielding offers for Dalvin Cook. Should Cook be dealt, Mattison would be a huge winner in free agency. If he stays, it's back to being a backup. Mattison's ranking of RB43 won't move much until Cook's situation is resolved. Stay tuned.

Still only 24, dynasty managers have been patiently waiting for Mattison to get his chance on the open market and 2023 could be that year. With Dalvin Cook under contract through 2023 and entrenched as the starter, every indication is that Mattison will move onto greener pastures and should have an opportunity to be a lead back wherever he lands. Mattison finished with a career low in total touches in 2022 and will be looking to secure his first starting job elsewhere, a fact which shouldn't elude dynasty coaches. Acquisition of DLF's RB45 prior to learning about his ultimate landing spot will carry risk but also potential reward for non risk-averse coaches. Possessing rookie second-round value, there's tremendous potential upside to Mattison's 2023 value but with attached backup level risk.
